The Ume Japanese glass teapot is adorned with a raised plum blossom branch that seems to grow across its hammered glass. Made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass, it can go on the heat to warm water, then brews your tea before your eyes. With its 930 ml capacity and built-in spout filter, it is as practical as it is beautiful.

  • Hammered borosilicate glass, heat resistant
  • Capacity: 930 ml, around 4 cups
  • 2-in-1: heats water over a low flame, then brews your tea
  • Built-in filter in the spout to hold back the leaves
  • Raised plum blossom branch, gold-tone openwork lid knob
  • Metal handle wrapped in natural fibres
  • 60-day returns, tracked shipping

A glass teapot you can use on the heat

Borosilicate glass copes well with changes in temperature: the Ume teapot can heat water directly on the heat, over a low flame. Once the water reaches the right temperature, add your leaves and brew in the same teapot.

Thanks to the transparent glass, you can watch the colour of your tea develop and know exactly when to serve. Glass does not hold on to smells or flavours, so you can switch from green tea to a herbal infusion without any mixing of tastes. The built-in spout filter holds back the leaves as you pour.

Ume: the plum blossom, a symbol of renewal

Ume means “plum tree” in Japanese. Its flowers are among the first to bloom at the end of winter, sometimes under the snow, which makes them a Japanese symbol of perseverance and renewal, celebrated well before the cherry blossoms.

On the teapot, a raised plum branch with an antique silver finish carries three flowers with red stamens and a few buds. The hammered glass makes the light sparkle, and the gold-tone openwork lid knob adds a precious touch.

Making tea with your Ume teapot

  1. Fill the teapot with water, without filling it to the brim.
  2. Heat over a low flame: the flame must not extend beyond the base of the teapot.
  3. Let it cool slightly to suit your tea: around 70–80 °C for Japanese green tea, 90–95 °C for black tea.
  4. Add the leaves, brew for the recommended time and serve: the spout filter holds back the leaves.

You can also use it as a classic teapot, with water heated in a kettle.

Which teas can you brew in a glass teapot?

  • Japanese green teas (sencha, genmaicha): their green colour shines through the glass.
  • Black teas and oolongs: watch the colour deepen to judge your brew.
  • Herbal teas and flowers: hibiscus, chamomile or blooming teas that open in the water, a real show.
  • Very fine teas (rooibos, broken leaves): add a tea strainer to the filter if needed.

Care and safety

  • Hand wash in hot soapy water with a soft sponge: the raised decoration and handle are not dishwasher safe.
  • Not microwave safe: the teapot has metal parts.
  • Low flame only, kept beneath the base. Not suitable for induction hobs.
  • Never heat it empty and avoid extreme thermal shock, such as placing the hot teapot on a cold, wet surface.
  • Hold it by the handle, with an oven glove if needed: the glass and lid get hot.
  • For tea stains: a little bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar, then rinse.

FAQ: Ume Japanese glass teapot

Can the Ume teapot be used on the heat?

Yes. The Ume teapot is made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass: it can heat water over a low flame, as long as the flame stays beneath the base. It is not suitable for induction hobs and must never be heated empty.

What is borosilicate glass?

It is a glass designed to withstand changes in temperature, used for ovenware, stovetop glassware and laboratory equipment. It handles boiling water and gentle heating, and like all glass, it does not hold on to smells or flavours.

What is the capacity of the Ume teapot?

The Ume teapot holds 930 ml, around 4 cups. It is an ideal size for sharing tea with others or enjoying several cups throughout the day.

Does the Ume teapot have a filter?

Yes, a filter is built into the spout: it holds back the leaves as you pour, with no infuser needed. For very fine teas such as rooibos or broken leaves, you can add a tea strainer.

What does the Ume teapot's decoration represent?

Ume means “plum tree” in Japanese. The decoration depicts a flowering plum branch. In Japan, plum blossoms open at the end of winter, before the cherry blossoms, and symbolise perseverance and renewal.

Which teas can I brew in a glass teapot?

All teas work well: Japanese green teas, black teas, oolongs, herbal teas or blooming teas that open in the water. The transparent glass lets you follow the colour of your tea and serve at just the right moment.

How do I care for the Ume teapot?

Wash it by hand in hot soapy water with a soft sponge, then dry it. It is not dishwasher safe, because of the raised decoration and handle, nor microwave safe, as it has metal parts. For tea stains, use a little bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar.

How is it different from the other Takumiya teapots?

The Ume is our only glass teapot: it can go over a low flame and lets you see your tea brewing. The Nami is an 800 ml cast iron teapot-kettle, the Ishi a 1.2 L cast iron brewing teapot, and the Yama a small 350 ml ceramic teapot with a tealight warmer.

Is the Ume teapot a good gift?

Yes. Elegant, original and useful every day, the Ume teapot makes a wonderful gift for tea lovers and fans of Japanese culture. Paired with teacups, it becomes a complete Japanese tea set.

Can I return the teapot?

Yes. You have 60 days to return your teapot if it is not right for you. Shipping is tracked and our customer support team is happy to answer your questions before and after your order.
