A cast iron tetsubin teapot-kettle

In Japan, the tetsubin is a cast iron kettle that has been used for centuries to heat water for tea. The Nami teapot follows the same principle: place it on a gas hob over a low flame to heat water directly in the cast iron.

Once the water reaches the right temperature, you can brew your tea in it and serve straight away. Cast iron stores heat and releases it slowly, so your tea stays hot far longer than in a glass or porcelain teapot.

Nami: a wave design inspired by Japanese prints

Nami means “wave” in Japanese. All around the teapot, raised breaking waves and their sprays of foam recall one of the most famous motifs in Japanese art.

This theme was made famous by The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Hokusai's woodblock print. On the matte black cast iron, the relief plays with the light, and the teapot's low, wide shape gives it real presence on the table.

First use

  1. Rinse the teapot with hot water.
  2. Boil water two or three times, then discard it.
  3. Boil water with a small handful of green tea leaves for about ten minutes, then empty the teapot.
  4. Dry it with the lid open while it is still warm. Your teapot is ready.

Making tea with your Nami teapot

  1. Fill the teapot with water without filling it to the brim.
  2. Heat over a low flame on the gas hob. Use an oven glove: cast iron gets very hot.
  3. Let it cool slightly to suit your tea: around 70–80 °C for Japanese green tea, 90–95 °C for black tea.
  4. Add the leaves, brew for the recommended time, then pour through a tea strainer (infuser not included).

Caring for your cast iron teapot

  • Rinse with hot water after each use, without washing-up liquid or abrasive sponges.
  • Never put it in the dishwasher.
  • Empty it completely after use: never leave tea or water standing inside.
  • Dry it with the lid open while it is still warm: the residual heat evaporates moisture and prevents rust.
  • Never heat it empty and avoid thermal shock (cold water in a very hot teapot).
  • If rust appears: scrub gently with a soft brush, then boil water with green tea leaves for two or three days in a row.

FAQ: Nami Japanese cast iron teapot

Can the Nami teapot be used on the hob?

Yes, the Nami teapot is a cast iron teapot-kettle: it can heat water on a gas hob over a low flame. Use an oven glove to handle it, as cast iron gets very hot, and never leave it on the heat without water.

Why choose a Japanese cast iron teapot?

Cast iron stores heat and releases it slowly, so your water and tea stay hot far longer than in a glass or porcelain teapot. Sturdy and durable, a cast iron teapot lasts for years and brings real decorative presence to your table.

What is the capacity of the Nami teapot?

The Nami teapot holds 800 ml, around 3 to 4 cups. It is an ideal size for sharing tea for two or with a few friends, or for enjoying several cups throughout the day.

Do I need an infuser to brew tea?

The Nami teapot comes without an infuser. You can place the leaves directly in the hot water and pour the tea through a tea strainer, or use an infuser of your choice. Remember to remove the leaves once the tea has brewed.

How do I use a cast iron teapot for the first time?

Rinse it with hot water, then boil water two or three times and discard it. Next, boil water with a small handful of green tea leaves for about ten minutes, then empty and dry the teapot. This traditional ritual prepares the cast iron for use.

How do I care for a cast iron teapot?

Rinse it with hot water, without washing-up liquid or abrasive sponges, and never in the dishwasher. Empty it completely after each use and let it dry with the lid open while it is still warm: the residual heat evaporates any remaining moisture.

What should I do if my cast iron teapot rusts?

Cast iron can rust if it stays damp. Gently scrub the area with a soft brush, rinse, then boil water with green tea leaves, repeating this two or three days in a row. To prevent rust, always empty and dry your teapot thoroughly.

What does the Nami teapot's design represent?

Is the Nami teapot a good gift?
